Abhyanga or massage is simply the application of medicated herbal oils over body in a specific manner to activate the hidden energy sources / marmas of the body.

Sneha has two meaning in Sanskrit text ‘oil’ and ‘love’. Application of oil to body, is basically treating the body with love and care.

In Ayurveda, daily application of oils helps the body to achieve complete energy balance, rejuvenation and relaxation of body. Skin is said to be the best dressing of the body, it provides protection against various external factors thus treating the skin with herbal oils improves immunity

 What benefits does massage provide?

How many times should you perform abhyanga/ massage?

For vaat prakruti – skin is drier, uneven tone with wrinkles. One should perform abhyanga/ massage 4-5 times a week

For pitta prakruti – skin is highly sensitive, slightly red, warm and little oils present. One should perform abhyanga/ massage 2-3 times a week.

For kapha prakriti – skin is oily, dull and thick in nature. One should perform abhyanga/ massage 1-2 times a week.

Self- massage

One should take required amount of warm oil in a bowl.

Start the application from head/ scalp region – massage about 15 mins in circular strokes. Then apply to the face, over cheeks, also massage the ear lobes as it channelizes the energy sources of the body.

After facial region is done, start with upper limbs and then lower limbs, the direction of application should be upwards that is towards the heart and Finally over the abdomen in circular manner.

Let the oil sit for 15- 20 minutes

 

After abhyanga, one should take steam or a hot water shower, as it helps in better absorption of oils. One can use mild soap, specifically an herbal soap to remove excess oils.

( if one is not able to perform all the steps of abhyanga, shiro- abhyanga – massage to head region and paad-abhyanga – massage to soles  should be practiced daily)
